2003 VW Beetle. Worth buying?

Was this a bad year for VW cars? Anyone experience problems from this make/model?

I have less than a 500 credit score, I am turning in my lease in less than a month, they will not lease me another car and will not refinance my lease to a buy. I was offered an 03 beetle with 36,000 miles. Previously had only one owner. Putting $ 2,000 down, total car price $ 9,000. Financing only $ 7,000. Working student... not many options.
