Advice for getting a new car with bad credit?

Question by 1cookie: Advice for getting a new car with bad credit?
What are some steps i need to take to purchase a used car i need a new car but my credit is shot any advice would be great!
(besides the obvious of saving up for a big down payment)
is financing a bad idea?
Ok Im not talking brand new right off the lot im talking about a USED car with the limit of $ 9,000 or so dollars.......
when i say $ 9000 dollars i mean im not looking at a used car that cost more than that
